Want to add your spouse, sibling, or housemate to your Dubai tenancy contract? In most cases this requires either a contract amendment or — more commonly — a new DLD Unified Tenancy Contract listing both names. Here's exactly how to do it.
Why Add Someone to the Contract?
Adding a person formally to the tenancy contract gives them legal status as a tenant, with three big benefits:
- Eligibility for residence visa renewal using this address
- Right to be named on the Ejari (required for school enrolment, family visa)
- Joint legal protection under Dubai tenancy law
- Proof of address for bank account, driving licence, etc.
Amendment vs New Contract: Which Do You Need?
Two paths exist, depending on the change:
- Contract Amendment — a signed addendum to the existing contract. Works for minor changes mid-term, but Ejari may not accept it for new tenant addition.
- New Tenancy Contract — replaces the existing contract from a new start date. Required by Ejari in most cases when adding a tenant. Both parties + new tenant sign.
In practice, most landlords reissue a new DLD contract listing both tenants rather than dealing with amendment paperwork that Ejari may reject.
Step-by-Step: Adding a Tenant via New Contract
Special Case: Adding a Spouse
If you're adding a spouse, you may need the marriage certificate (attested) for the Ejari registration. The added spouse can then use the address for visa sponsorship and dependent enrolment.
Special Case: Adding a Co-Tenant Who Pays Rent
If the new person is a financial co-tenant (e.g. flatmate splitting rent), the contract should clearly list both as Tenant — both names, both Emirates IDs, both phone numbers and emails. This protects each tenant individually under Dubai tenancy law.
What If the Landlord Refuses?
Landlords can legally refuse to add a tenant — they have discretion over who occupies their property. If they refuse, your options are: continue with the existing single-tenant contract (the additional person can occupy informally but has no legal status), or look for a more flexible landlord at next renewal.
